Montessori activities by age

The right activity at the wrong age frustrates everyone. Here is what to offer a 2, 3, 4 and 5 year old, and what each one is quietly building.

Montessori activities for 2 year olds

At two the child is driven by movement and order. Keep activities short, physical, and repeatable.

  • · Carrying a small jug of water across the room without spilling
  • · Putting shoes on a low shoe mat, every single time
  • · Transferring walnuts between two bowls by hand, then with tongs
  • · Wiping a spill with a child-sized cloth
  • · Posting shapes, opening and closing containers, matching lids

Montessori activities for 3 year olds

Three is the age of sequences. The child can now hold several steps in mind and wants to finish what they start.

  • · Preparing a snack: peeling a banana, spreading butter, slicing a soft fruit
  • · Washing and drying their own cup and putting it away
  • · Dressing frames — buttons, zips, poppers, velcro
  • · Sorting laundry by colour and folding facecloths
  • · Watering plants and sweeping crumbs into a dustpan

Montessori activities for 4 year olds

Four brings precision, language, and pride in doing things properly. Raise the standard, not the noise.

  • · Setting the table for the whole family, correctly laid
  • · Polishing shoes or a small mirror with a real set of tools
  • · Sound games — 'I spy something beginning with mmm' — before letters
  • · Sandpaper letters and moveable alphabet work
  • · Counting real objects into groups of ten

Montessori activities for 5 year olds

Five wants responsibility and a role in the household. Give real jobs with real consequences.

  • · Making their own breakfast start to finish
  • · Writing a shopping list and finding items in the shop
  • · Caring for a pet or a garden bed on a fixed schedule
  • · Reading simple stories aloud to a younger sibling
  • · Simple addition and subtraction with beads or counters

Common questions

What Montessori activities are best for a 3 year old?

Practical life sequences with a clear beginning and end — preparing a snack, washing a cup, dressing frames. At three the child can hold several steps in mind and is deeply satisfied by completing a whole job themselves.

How long should a Montessori activity last?

As long as the child stays with it. A two year old may repeat a transfer activity for three minutes; a five year old may work for forty. Never interrupt concentration to move on to something else.

Do Montessori activities need special materials?

Most do not. Practical life uses real household objects in child-sized versions. Buy specialised sensorial or language materials only once the daily routines are established.
